Before leaving, they ask Keith for assistance in hiding a small box in the yacht's concrete ballast. The couple plan a long pleasure cruise in their small yacht before settling in British Columbia, meanwhile leaving their 10-year-old daughter with Keith and his wife. ![]() ![]() ![]() This story was not at all what I expected. I'm a huge fan of tabletop RPGs, and it's always interesting to see other peoples' takes on the game. What made the experience of listening to NPCs the most enjoyable? I'll be failing a test tomorrow because I couldn't ![]() His voice is pleasant, and all of the character voices are both distinct and enjoyable. Yes - he has a pleasant writing style and a sense of humor that, while it doesn't make you laugh out loud, can still make you smile. Would you be willing to try another book from Drew Hayes? Why or why not? Overall I enjoyed the book and would gladly read more by Hayes along this vein. That said, this point didn't grow too onerous. There are three real action sequences in the book and the first two do get a bit long, because they are told from multiple characters doing their own thing on the battlefield. The story isn't grand or revolutionary, the characters aren't gripping, but the story still has its own charm and the prose is both readable and has a welcoming feel to it. Without giving away too much, NPCs takes some of the conventions and tropes of tabletop roleplaying and applies them to a world, treating them more seriously than Order of the Stick does - while still keeping a fairly light tone. If you're a gamer, you may appreciate the meta-ness Hayes offers. Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But al-Sayyid Ahmad's authority is increasingly threatened-when he sends his wife away for making a forbidden trip outdoors in his absence, her sons send intermediaries to plead for her Aisha is pressed to accept a second proposal Yasin, bored with his arranged marriage, rapes his wife's servant and Fahmy joins a nationalist group organizing against the British soldiers who lounge outside al-Sayyid Ahmed's house on Palace Walk-until finally he must accept the ultimate chastisement: one of his children is buried in a public ceremony, and not as his child. The opening of this first installment finds pious, licentious al-Sayyid Ahmad ruling his family with an iron hand: his wife Amina passively accepts his nightly absences without any idea how much more gregarious he can be than the tyrant she knows his sons Yasin, Fahmy, and Kamal tremble in his presence and accept his orders without question even though they're aware of his sexual hypocrisy his daughter Aisha forgoes a marriage proposal because her older sister Khadija hasn't been spoken for. The complete trilogy takes the family of al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad from WW I to the 1952 overthrow of King Farouk. ![]() ![]() Hard on the first English trade publication of any of the 1988 Nobel prize-winner's fiction (The Thief and the Dogs, Wedding Song, and The Beginning and the End-not reviewed) comes this first volume of his celebrated Cairo Trilogy, written in 1952 and originally published in Arabic in 1956. ![]() ![]() ![]() Regarding the "need" for c-sections today, most of this is due to the continual interventions routinely performed in hospitals. As Judith Goldsmith states in her book Childbirth Wisdom from the World's Oldest Societies, throughout history healthy tribal women have successfully given birth with little or no assistance. Unsafe tribal practices such as rubbing dung into the umbilical cord also caused numerous problems. Yes, sometimes they died but this was nearly always due to poverty - lack of food, dirty water and inadequate housing. As far as women and babies routinely dying prior to the advent of the modern day hospital, this is a myth. Just as our emotions greatly effect sex, they greatly effect birth. Many of the problems in birth are caused by fear (which triggers the fight/flight response and shuts down labor), shame and guilt. Try bringing a crowd into the bathroom with you and watch what happens. When any natural bodily function is observed by strangers, it changes. Our bodies are extremely responsive to our thoughts as well as our environment. Women's bodies were designed to give birth. I am happy for this family but I agree with Woogie. ![]() ![]() ![]() Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing, one of the three core titles in the Rich Dad Series, covers the basic rules of investing, how to reduce your investment risk, how to convert your earned income into passive income.
